Since the great recession of 2008, global business tourism has been on the rise, with a positive forecast for 2020. According to the Global Business Travel Association‘s (GBTA) Annual Global Report & Forecast, global business travel spend reached over $1.2 trillion USD in 2015, representing a 5% growth from 2014. The same report predicts that global business travel spend will increase at an average rate of 5.8% to reach $1.6 trillion in 2020.
DMC Travel worldwide statistics and destinations
Everyone has their own list of top destinations for DMC travel – we certainly have our own favourites! Thankfully, various organizations and associations publish yearly reports and statistics on global business tourism that can help bring some light to the world’s most frequented MICE destinations. The ICCA’s 2016 Country & City Rankings report offers perhaps one of the most illuminating references in terms of MICE tourism. It lists Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, Berlin, and London as the 5 top destinations for meetings and incentives in the world, with Madrid joining the top 10 in 7th position. The USA, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Spain are listed as the top 5 countries in the world.
Pacific World’s 2014 Destination Index is also an interesting source of information for top DMC destinations worldwide. The report offers a monthly breakdown of the world’s most popular destinations based on requests into more than 80 destinations and 60,000 annual international delegates. The overall winners of the year in the EMEA were Italy, the United Arab Emirates, and France, while in Asia the top destinations were South Korea, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.

Our personal favourite, Spain, consistently features in the world’s top 10 destinations for DMC travel. The country attracts increasing numbers of visitors in both leisure and business tourism. Each of its largest cities, spread out across the country, offer unique experiences and opportunities for cultural routes and workshops to learn about the city’s folklore and traditions. Madrid and Barcelona are the country’s most well-known cities, but you’d be wrong to pass on the wonders that await you in Seville, Valencia, or Málaga.
